2017

Residency / Action / Performance

Between 30 days of residency in the, Hooyong arts Center/Nottle Teather, Wonju, South Korea. Artists from differents backgrounds and nationalities ,South Korea, Vietnam, Mexico, Indonesia, Peru, Iran, Brazil and Japan, had discussted Democracy in the 21 ceuntury. The result of this residency is the performance LAURA _ AkiÓ->DemonCrazy- Chemical Toilet, Hooyong, South Korea.

In her new performance, LAURA _ AkiÓ->DemonCrazy- Chemical Toilet, Hooyong, South Korea, LAURA _ AkiÓ-> performs inside an abandoned Chemical Toilet.

Mirroring the discomfort, suffocation and weirdness, inherent to the chemical toilet, with the political and economic crisis that Brazil is now facing, the artist questions our democracy that is beared it in a neoliberalism and capitalism politics.

Starting the performance brushing her teeth, the artist (re)creates her own daily ritual. In the performance instead of a common brush paste, the figure uses Wassabi paste, expressing the bitterness, unpleasantness and craziness of our democracy-Demoncrazy.

Suggesting the change of this type of government, LAURA _ AkiÓ-> appropriates the symbolic aspect of some elements:

Popcorn – which in the Umbanda religion symbolizes the transformation;

Pentagram- which is related to the Hermetism philosophy;

Straw broom that is associated, in the western culture, to the pagans rituals and to the Dokkaebi figure, in the Korean culture;

Makgeolli,  South Korean traditional drink, that is used to worship the spirits of gods in Korean Shamanism practices.

Renovating the symbolical aspect of this old secreted elements, the performance turns out in the end giving a new meaning for the South Korean traditional drink, Makgeolli. That becomes the “Holly Makgeolli”, an analogy to the water in the Christian religion, which represents the redemption of the world, life, continuity and resurrection.

    Makgeolli 2 cure <-> Popcorn to transform

Creating her own ritual, the artist proposes the transformation of

DemonCrazy

in

DiamondCrazy

The displacement of the figure, between Hooyong arts Center, (residency) and the city streets, to search Makgeolli bottles discarded by the inhabitants of Wonju city, was filmed by the artist.

She inveted a system that resembles the records obtained by a Gopro camera. This filming system is attached in her hat. The artist recorded not only the discarded bottles searching, but also the reaction and the relation of the pedestrians when they came across her figure. This action, ends up assuming a performative character, which from the records, shows us reactions characterized by scared, happy, doubtful and amazed glances of people passing by LAURA_ AkiÓ->.
